The planned congresses and National convention of the ruling All Progressives Congress has been postponed for the umpteenth time. This is after the different factions have concluded compiling their list of proposed ward, chapter and state Executives and huge amount of money budgeted to bribe their way through.
In Akwa Ibom State, there are two major factions, the AAC and the Akwa Ibom Democratic forum (ADF). While the AAC is loyal to the secretary of the Party, Dr. John James Akpan Udoedehe, ADF on the other hand is sponsored and is loyal to the immediate past governor of the state, Senator Godswill Akpabio. The two groups have been embroiled in supremacy battle by trying to lure highly placed members of the party to their individual folds.
It is alleged that while the AAC is keen about returning some party officials who have worked hard and loyal to the party to serve another term, ADF on the other hand wants to replace the existing chapter chairmen with their chapter coordinators so as to have strict control of the party structure. This, has however caused a crack on their wall as some of their stakeholders who were not carried along in the process are bent on pulling the proposed structure down.
With the indefinite postponement of the Congress, all the groups now have the opportunity to return to the drawing board and figure themselves out by aligning and realigning to protect the party from disintegration.
APC has witnessed influx of some governors and highly placed individuals in recent time. This has now assured the party of maintening it’s leading position in the country but in Akwa Ibom State, they need more of cooperation than intra-party fights to make a headway.
