Akwa Ibom State Deputy Governor, Mr. Moses Ekpo has extolled American base philanthropists, Mr. and Mrs. Eyo James, describing them as towers of strength, who have contributed immensely to the educational sector of the state.
Speaking during the presentation of educational materials to Primary School, Ikot Inyang Abia in Ukanafun last Monday, the Deputy Governor lauded the philanthropists for their benevolence to the pupils and teachers of the school.
Mr. Ekpo, who described the donated Items as a complete education pack, stressed that the items were in line with the State Government declaration of state of emergency in the education sector.
According to him, “this is what Governor Udom Emmanuel wants the people of Akwa Ibom to do,” and therefore, called on all industrious sons of Ukanafun to emulate the philanthropists.
Describing primary school as the foundation of education, Mr. Ekpo mentioned that the state government was aware of the challenges associated with primary education in the state, and was also doing everything possible to make things better.
Describing primary school as the foundation of education, Mr. Ekpo also advised youths in the area to engage in skills acquisition to enhance their chances of becoming good citizens.
Speaking earlier, the Chairman of Ukanafun Local Government Area, Pastor Godwin Inyieng maintained that Public Private Partnership was the best way to enhance good governance, mentioning that Mrs Itanwan James and her husband just demonstrated goodwill by donating the items to the school
Pastor Inyieng stated that his administration had made public power supply available to the community, and promised to grade roads in Ukanafun Local Government, starting from Ikot Inyang Abia.
Presenting the Items, Mrs. Itanwan James stressed that she was married out of Ikot Inyang Abia but not sold, thus she came back to give back to the primary school as part of community service.
She acknowledged education as the bedrock of any economic and societal development. The items included a set of band, 70 school desks, 100 school bags, dozens of exercise books with pencils for pupils, 10 tables and chairs for teachers and a cash of N100,000.00.
Also speaking Mr. Eyo James, who encouraged the people of Ukanafun to learn the act of giving, promised the renovation of the dilapidated ceiling in the Assembly Hall of the school.
In appreciation, the Head Master of school, Deacon Effiong Akpan, thanked the donors of the Items stating that throughout his service as teacher, it was the first time he had witnessed such a donation by an individual or family.
In attendance at the event were the Vice Chairman of Ukanafun Mrs. Imenesit Celeb Akpan, all council members, Bright Women Association, President of good women Association Mrs Nse Friday Abara , Youths ,elders of the community, teachers and pupils of Primary school, Ikot Inyang Abia.
